Those with commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) are held to a higher standard than other drivers. Instead of having a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit of .08, it’s .04. If you are familiar with BAC percentages, you know that .04 can be reached after only a few beers in an average person.

This BAC limit is set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. It applies to a number of people including those who own or lease commercial vehicles, those who drive commercial vehicles, for-hire motor carriers, private carriers, civic organizations, churches and those who assign drivers to operate commercial vehicles. Federal, state and local government officials may also be held to this higher standard.

On top of the lower BAC limit, commercial drivers are not allowed to drive within four hours of having alcohol to drink. Since this is the case, it would technically be possible for someone to watch you have a drink with dinner and then call the police when you get into your vehicle.
